Mohamed Salah has apologised via Twitter for meeting with Kadyrov.

GROZNY: Mohamed Salah has apologised for meeting with controversial Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov. According to Salah, he mistook Kadyrov for former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard.

Mohamed Salah was heavily criticised for posing for pictures alongside Kadyrov yesterday. Now the Liverpool star has taken to Twitter to apologise.

Kadyrov was appointed President of the Chechen Republic in 2007. Since then he has been accused of brutally repressing dissent through torture and extrajudicial killings.

According to reports, Mohamed Salah seemed confused at his photo-op with the tracksuit-clad Kadyrov, complimenting him on his «new beard» and challenging him to a free-kick shootout, which Kadyrov declined.
